"The State Archives has in its Cherokee County records a small book which lists numerous Cherokee County marriages for which bonds and licenses were issued by the Register of Deeds during what could be called the 'Reconstruction Period'. This appears to be a book once in use in the Cherokee County Register of Deeds Office. Some of these marriages are not in the present Courthouse records in Murphy. This book may possibly be the only official record of any of them. The book cannot be photocopied, and the Archives staff does not search the pages. Those appearing here are only about half the total list. Time cut short a transcription of the complete book. Perhaps someone with more time can finish the job for publication in a future issue of the Quarterly.This is an attempt at a verbatim transcription of the original both as to the spelling and physical placement of the text.
