James Hual "Tobe" Crawford, M.D. son of James Wiley Crawford and Eugenia Poteet, b. 6/22/1866, Clay Co., NC, d. 6/10/1959, Andrews, Clay Co., NC, buried at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Cemetery, Clay Co., NC. Married Harriett Long, 2/22/1889 in Hayesville, Clay Co., NC. She is buried at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Cemetery, Clay Co., NC. CHILDREN: GEORGE OLIVER, ELZA, EULA MAE, LEE, and FRANK CHARLES NOTE: James Hual Crawford was a doctor and state senator/representative to the State of North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives during Sessions 1939 and 1945, and a State Senator representing the 33rd District during Session of 1953. He attended the Hicksville Academy in Hayesville and studied medicine at the University of Chattanooga. He began the practice of medicine at the age of 26 and practiced for sixty-six years and delivered more than 4000 babies during that time. He practiced medicine in the counties of Cherokee, Clay, Macon and Graham. He also served as coroner for Cherokee Co., NC in 1910. Dr. Crawford operated a hotel in Robbinsville from 1943 until 1959 and owned and operated two farms. His hotel, when built, was estimated to be worth approximately $100,000.00. His hotel served 3 meals per day, but Dr. Crawford refused to allow Coca-Cola to be served. He did not drink alcohol, coffee or smoke. He was a beekeeper and owned several thousand heads of Hereford cattle. Letitia Clementine Crowe, 8/28/1915, Unaka, NC, daughter of General Jackson Crowe and Martha Ann Donley, of Unaka, Cherokee Co., NC; m. Ella (ULN) and 3 others. George and Letitia had three children; George and Ella had one. Children of George Oliver Crawford and Letitia Clementine Crowe: Melvin George "M.G." Crawford, b 8/25/1919, Cherokee Co., NC, d. 7/8/1974 Ellijay, Georgia, buried Hayesville U.M. Cemetery, Hayesville, Clay Co., NC; m. Libby Irene Donaldson, Twiggs County, Jeffersonville, Georgia 5/29/1941, daughter of Thomas P. Donaldson, Mayor of McCaysville, Georgia and Mary Ethel Kell, U.S. Postmaster of McCaysville, Georgia. Also married 2 others. NOTE: M.G. served as Sheriff of Cherokee Co., NC after his uncle Frank Charles Crawford, Sheriff, was killed in the line of duty; retired from the NC State Bureau of Investigation. NOTE: Libby Donaldson Crawford was an elementary school teacher who taught in Beaverdam and Unaka, NC and Cobb County, Georgia until retiring in 1982. M.G. and Libby have two living children. Martha Deryl Crawford - living; widow; Deryl has 3 children. James "Jimmy" Jackson Crawford, b. 5/26/1926, Cherokee Co., NC, d. (?); m. Evelyn Kelly and 4 others. He is buried at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Cemetery, Clay Co., NC. Jimmy has 4 living children, one deceased. Children of George Oliver Crawford and Ella (?) Burch Crawford - living; married; 1 child.
