General Jackson ("G.J." or "Jack") Crowe was born on June 22, 1852, in Unaka, Cherokee
County, NC, the 10th child of William Crowe and Lucinda Dyer Crowe, who were both born
in South Carolina. The Crowe line before William can be traced back to the late 1600's
in St. George's Parish, Baltimore, MD. Jack married Martha Ann Donley on October 29,
1871 in Unaka, NC, at the home of Silas Rose, Justice of Peace. Martha was born April
16, 1854 in Monroe Co., TN, to John Donley and Sarah Irons Donley. Sarah Irons Donley
was the daughter of Harmon Irons and Julia Ann Phillips of Monroe Co., TN.
Jack Crowe was a farmer and operated a gristmill for many years on Beaverdam Creek in
Unaka. He lived in Beaverdam Township all his life and was listed by Margaret Walker
as one of the early settlers of Beaverdam in Our Heritage, The People of Cherokee County,
North Carolina. He was also a justice of the peace, performing many marriages in the
area. He died June 9, 1934 in Unaka, preceded in death by Martha, who died May 18,
1932. They are both buried in the Unaka Cemetery.
Jack and Martha had 10 children, all born in Unaka, Cherokee County, NC:
1. John C. Crowe, b. 9/4/1872, m. Florence Rose 1/9/1894 at his parents' home, the
marriage performed by his father. He died 7/21/1958 and is buried in Unaka Cemetery.
Their children were Lon Decatur, Bert, Glenn, Maude, Emma and Ruby.
1. William Thomas Crowe, b. <1876>, m. Lena Stalcup7/24/1895 at Grape Creek,
NC at the home of Mrs. Stalcup. Their children were Maddie, Verona, Pryor, Clifford
Thomas and Nell. He later married Winnie Hunt. Their children were Jane, William and
Margaret. NOTE: He served as Sheriff of Monroe Co., TN.
1. S. Lucinda Crowe, b. Feb. 1878, m. Seaborn Moss 7/20/1902 at her parents home.
They had no children. She died 7/12/1970 and is buried in Unaka Cemetery.
1. Joseph P. Crowe, b. 9/9/1879, m. Lillie Kirkland 5/18/1899 in Unaka. Their children
were Frank Jackson, Loma Pearl and Martha. He died 7/1/1934.
1. James S. Crowe, b. 8/2/1883, m. Ruth Bell. He died 7/23/1920 and is buried in
Unaka Cemetery.
1. Evaline Nancy Crowe, b. 6/6/1886, m. Lon Burrell in Unaka, 7/29/1906. Their child-
ren were Dewey, Jim, Charles, Hannah and Cindy. Eva died 12/12/1959.
1. Elizabeth Irene Crowe, b. 3/1/1889, m. George Moore in Unaka 9/17/1904. Their
children were Emma, Willard, Newell, Jean and Mary. She died 6/18/1962 and is buried
in Bellview, NC.
1. Katherine Florence Crowe, b. 10/10/1890, m. Walter Jack Bryson 8/13/1913 at the
home of Neal Rhodes. Their children were Hazel Earle and Homer Hoyt. She later
married Bill Everette. She died 6/18/1974 in Tennille, Washington County, Georgia.
a. Hazel Earle Bryson m. Roscoe Strickland. Children: Living (4). Earle died 1999
in Tennille, Ga.
b. Homer Hoyt Bryson - Living, married w/children.
9. Melissie Crowe, b. 2/28/1894, m. Henrey Jeff Burgess in 1910 in Unaka. Their children
were Ruby, Ruth, Willabell, Betty and Bill Joe. She died 10/12/1929 and is buried in
Unaka Cemetery.
10. Letitia Clementine Crowe, b. 5/25/1898, m. George Oliver Crawford 8/28/1915 at the
West McDonald home. Their children were Melvin George, Martha Deryl and James Jackson.
She later married Claude Mauger. She died 1/9/1985 in Cleveland, TN and is buried in
Cleveland Memorial Gardens NOTE #2: As an adult, Letitia changed her name to "Louise".
a. Melvin George Crawford, b. 8/26/1919, m. Libbie Irene Donaldson in Twiggs County,
Georgia 5/29/1941. He died 7/7/1974 Ellijay, Georgia and is buried at Hayesville
Cemetery, NC. Their children: Living. NOTE: Melvin George Crawford served as Sheriff
of Cherokee County, NC.

c. James Jackson Crawford, b. 5/26/1926 m. Evelyn Kelly. Children: 1 living; Carla,
deceased 1999. He later m. Nona (ULN). Their children: Living (3). He is deceased.
