Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery

This active and growing church is located on Highway 294, approximately 5 miles off Highway 64 west. It is in the community of Suit, NC, though the mailing address is now Murphy.

The current building being used by the Friendship Baptist Church dates to 1916. The congregation was founded in 1865. The cemetery is located on a hill behind the church, a lovely, peaceful hillside surrounded by mountains and shaded by several ancient oaks. It is beautifully maintained, and many of the stones have been restored or reinforced. Few are in disrepair.

The first burial in the cemetery was Arthur Abernathy, a small child when he died in 1887. According to Miss Hattie Parker, Mrs. Celia McNabb picked out the burial place for the child. Mrs. McNabb was the grandmother of Guy McNabb. Both are buried at Friendship. There are only nine stones that record burials before 1900. It is likely that the numerous unmarked or undated stones are for early burials. The earliest birth date recorded in the cemetery was for Jessie Pate, born in 1820 and died in 1903. The name most recorded in the cemetery is Stiles, with 34 burials. Next are McNabb, Beaver(s), and Wood(s) with 18-19 burials each.

The cemetery reflects a surprising military history for the community. It hold the bodies of 40 veterans of every major U.S. war from the Civil War through Vietnam. There are four Civil War soldiers, three Union and one Confederate. One soldier was in the Spanish American War. Five were in the Army for World War I. In World War II there were no less than 17 men in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Five men saw duty in Korea in the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. The one Vietnam veteran was in the Air Force. Four additional veterans have no war duty specified on their stones.

In this listing the names and dates are given first in an index. Names are completed in brackets where provided by family members or acquaintances. Following the index, the burials are listed as they are located in the cemetery; I have assigned row numbers and stone numbers to assist in quickly finding a name from the index. In this listing, I include all the information on the grave site, including headstones, footstones, metal markers, and military markers. This full record can paint a more complete picture of the person, for instance, showing relationships with nearby graves, military service, affiliations with societies such as the Masons, and the love of their families in the inscriptions. Many stones include names of parents or spouses.

NOTE: The following information is from Janice Pate :
Jesse Pate was my great-grandfather and I know it is spelled correctly on his tombstone.... Jesse had donated the land for the church and cemetery. He took all of what is now refered to as Row 32 for his family. The 4 graves marked only with a small marble piece (not inscribed) are infant children of Elijah Pate and Josephine Tipton Pate. Their daughter Bonnie Lee (not Donnie) is buried next to her mother and their only other child, to survive infancy, is buried at the end of the row (William B.). Uncle Bill and Aunt Zilphy were married 9 days short of 75 years (can you believe it?). Even though he does not have a CSA marker Jesse Pate was in the 29th NC, Co. A.
