Hanging Dog Baptist Church Minutes 1861-1866

Data reprinted with permission from the Southwest North Carolina Genealogical Society Quarterly, now defunct, input by Diane Ramsey Miller. This data is not to be sold for any reason.

We are indebted to Reverend Garth Cook and the Hanging Dog Baptist Church for permitting us to publish the following historic records:

The church was organized May 4, 1844. Reverend George Washington Lovingood was the first pastor. He and his brother operated an iron ore forge in the Hanging Dog section in pioneer days.

Dear Brothern We have thought it our duty while in session to acquaint you with the conduct of Elder G.Y. Bergess a member of your church nad your minister. 1st while asembled in the church house he publicly pronounced the church in disorder and called for a rent in the church and threatened to report Her to the Association and stated if there was three members he would organize a church and further stated that if any of the members wished to go to Beaver Dam, that they would be received without letters.
Also we would invite your attention to his remarks in regard to the Murphy Church having publicly denide the church, and after that when called on owned the same., and now we submit these things for your consideration - and our prayer is that peace and harmony and union may abound amongst us fair will.
