James Lynn Hogue served as a Sergeant in Company "C", 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, U.S.A.
William M. Hogue [brother to James Lynn Hogue] Born around 1820, probably in Burke County, North Carolina. William first married Sarah Strawn in Murray County, Georgia on May 03, 1846. This union produced five children. Between 1856 and 1860, William and Sarah separated, with William heading north to East Tennessee. Sarah remained in Murray County, Georgia until after 1870 when she moves to St. Jo, Montague County, Texas and marries a Wm. Anderson there. She apparently lived there, along with her sons Jackson Hogue and Jesse Hogue, for the remainder of her life. William remarries to a Mary Jane Bates (b. Oct. 1839 in Georgia), on December 24, 1861 in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee. William & Mary moved to Blount County, Tennessee, alongside his father William and mother Hollin. The Hogue's spend the next 20 years or so in this area, moving between Blount County, Tennessee and Cherokee County, North Carolina. William and Mary's first two children are born in the Stecoah Township, just south of the present Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
In 1859, the father, William G. Hogue had purchased 50 acres of land on Stecoah Creek. Apparently his oldest son William M. Hogue liked Blount County more than this spot, moving back there in early 1864. The elder William G. Hogue willed his property to his youngest son, James Lynn Hogue, who remained in this area until his death in ca. 1892. According to land records, most or all of this property was used by James and his children to repay debts of one type or another and is probably not held by Hogue's at this time.
According to Civil War Pension Records, William M. Hogue was mustered into service for the Union Army. He served with his brother in Company "C", 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Volunteers, on August 05, 1864. While encountering the enemy in North Carolina on November 01, 1864, William was wounded when a minnie ball struck the tree beside him, sending bark into his face and destroying his right eye. He was discharged after his term of service had expired on December 22, 1864 at Knoxville. [Patrick Hogue has photo of William M. Hogue - It shows an obvious glass eye]. William returned home to Brick Mill, Blount County, Tennessee and was treated for his injury there by Dr. Ross Lane. William arrived home just a month before the birth of his next son Charles Sherman Hogue. William M. Hogue also served prior to the Civil War i the "Florida War", or "Seminole War".
Between 1880 and 1882 (with the exception of James Lynn Hogue and family in Graham County, North Carolina) William & Mary left the Great Smokey Mountains with their family and moved to Spanish Fort, Montague County, Texas. It is here that William files for his Civil War Pension on March 11, 1882. The Hogue's moved across the Red River into Indian Territory in July of 1883. William dies here on the 6th of March, 1886. He is buried in the Cemetery in Belleville, near the present town of Courtney. After William's death, Mary and her children move back and forth across the river several times. Children: Charles, John, William H. Hogue (oldest son of Jackson M. Hogue), Holley Welch, James M. Hogue, and Daniel (Sherman) Hogue (All children of James Lynn Hogue) are recorded on the 1900 Census of the Indian Territory, near what was to become Rubottom, Township, 7 South, Range 2 West. Mary moved to Sasakwa, Seminole County, with her son John and his family around 1906 and lived there until her death in September of 1908.
Daniel Washington Hogue [brother of William M. Hogue and James Lynn Hogue] also served in Company "C", 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, U.S.A.
Carey Jackson Hogue [son of Daniel Washington Hogue and nephew of James Lynn Hogue] was 3rd Corporal in Company "C", 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, U.S.A.
Jackson Monroe Hogue [son of William M. Hogue & Sarah Strawn] served in Company "K" 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, U.S.A.
According to Barbara Carpenter, Piercy Hogue was 1/2 Cherokee Indian. She has no way of knowing where that information came from. The Hogue land was on Fontana Lake in Swain County, North Carolina, which is where the movie "Nell" was filmed staring Jodie Foster, Liam Neeson, and Natasha Richardson. History confirms that the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians lived here in the heart of these Great Smokey Mountains.
