The Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery is located on Hopewell Road a few yards off Highway 64 West, approximately 14 miles west of Murphy, North Carolina.

The first meetings of Hopewell Baptist Church were held in a private home on Tilson Road about one half mile from the presently located church. The present location is the old Bryant homeplace, according to Mr. Wade Bryant. The first building was constructed of logs and was located in the vicinity of the present church, probably facing in a different direction. The first statistics from the Truett Association in the year 1858 are as follows:

The church was founded in 1860 as a Missionary Baptist Church. By 1866 the church had a membership of 102. The pastor was J. F. McGee. In 1899 the Sunday School membership was 75.

Some of the ministers who have served as pastors of Hopewell were: P. H. Chastain, James H. Morgan, James H. Smith, Grady Hicks, Henry Whitlow, Tom Truett, Calvin Thompson, Arthur Rucker, Guy Burger, Jerry Rice, Kenneth Payne, Ralph Morrow, Lester Cook, Grady Chastain, a Rev. Coffey and a Rev. Meadows. The present minister is Rev. Bill Maughan.

It is believed that the first person buried in Hopewell Cemetery was named Hefner. The family lived on the mountain to the south and brought the body for burial on a sled. It is one of many unmarked graves. The oldest existing gravestone is that of Cooper Cordell, who was born in 1802 and died in 1869. There were twelve others buried before 1900. At the present time, the cemetery contains 165 marked stones and approximately 26 unmarked stones. More Newmans are buried here than any other family, with 51 marked stones. There are numerous other Newman family members with different surnames.

The church celebrates Decoration Day each year on the fourth Sunday in May.
