THOMAS LEGION, COMPANY I OF THE FIRST REGIMENT MUSTER ROLL

31 August, 1863, through 31 October, 1863

This data was copied, compiled, typed and copyrighted by Judy Kimsey. Judy is graciously allowing the Western NC Genealogy Resource Center for Cherokee County to post this material for public, not for profit use. Not to be sold for any reason.

Historical Notes: Company I was a Confederate infantry unit whose soldiers were drawn primarily from Cherokee Co., NC (most inducted at Valley Town) and from parts of East Tennessee, primarily "S. Plains" I believe this stands for Strawberry Plains, in Jefferson Co., TN. However, it might be something else.

I was curious about the "evacuation of East Tennessee" that cut so many off from their company. I received the following from a Civil War buff:

"The action you describe here is the Tullahoma Campaign of August-September, 1863. Union General William Rosecrans forced the Confederate Army of Tennessee to evacuate Chattanooga and East Tennessee. After retiring to Georgia, General Bragg, commanding the Confederates (reinforced by Longstreet from Lee's army) won a signal victory at Chickamauga, forcing Rosecrans to retire to Chattanooga, where Bragg and the Confederates laid seige. The arrival of Ulysses S. Grant… with the help of Hooker's Corps of easterners and Sherman's army, lifted the seige and restored eastern Tennessee to Union Control."

At this point, the Tullahoma Campaign is the best bet for the battle that our ancestors were involved with during this time period. I'm open to other suggestions, of course.

Transcriber's Notes: This muster roll belonged to my great-great grandfather, Joseph Anderson Kimsey, and came down through the family to me. Joseph Kimsey was first Lt, then Capt. of Thomas Legion, Company I. Unfortunately, the document is in terrible shape, very faded and badly torn in one place. I've done my best to transcribe what is readable, but much is missing. Hope it's of some help to some of you.

This muster roll has the following columns:
Name
Rank
Enlisted, when, where, by whom and period (period is unreadable, in every instance)
Last paid: by whom, when (in the interest of getting this online quickly, I have not yet transcribed these columns -- will add at later date)
Names Present
Remarks
Payroll of the company (Again, not much information here, so I've skipped until later date)
Received Payment of (signature or mark of payee)
Witness (in every case, the witness is Willis Parker, Capt. of Company I).

If a column was left blank next to a soldiers' name, I've skipped it, to save space. If something is there, but unreadable, it's indicated as such. A (?) indicates that the transcription is questionable. I have transcribed as recorded, including several instances where I know that a name is misspelled.

There are several strange discrepancies. First, two soldiers in the hospital in Abingdon, VA, somehow managed to sign for their pay. In addition, Capt. Stringfield seems to have cloned himself, being in both Valley Town and "S. Plains, TN" on the same day. If S. Plains is, in fact, Strawberry Plains as I suspect, that would have been some one-day ride. Finally -- I'm not sure how the injured ended up in a hospital in Abingdon, VA. Seems like a long way to send an injured man from the east TN front.

I welcome corrections, and if anyone can fill in the missing blanks, please contact me. Please email Judy Kimsey with comments or corrections.
